The hidden details in art's masterpieces

Photos: What you missing in classic paintings

"Oath of the Horatii" (1784) by Jacques Louis David The neoclassical "Oath of the Horatii" depicts three Roman brothers saluting their father, who's holding their swords, before going off to fight rivals from Alba Longa. In their shadow, their mother huddles around her grandchildren.

"The older boy cannot refrain from peeping out in awe at the men and their glittering swords demonstrating that to lay down one's life for one's country is honorable and something for which all men should be prepared to fight, even from a young age," Hodge writes.

2 of 9

(CNN)It's easy to take a well known masterpiece at face value.

However, many of the world's most renowned works come loaded with underlying messages and back stories. Pastel on board in the original frame Price realized: $119,922,500 The sale of Edvard Munch's "The Scream" to billionaire Leon Black for $119.9 million in 2012 marked more than a new art record: it was the first time that a pastel, rather than an oil or acrylic painting, came anywhere near achieving such a price. This was in part due to the overwhelming popularity and international fame of the image, and the fact that it is the only version of Munch's signature work that is not owned by a museum.

2 of 10

Photos: Art auctions: A look at the top record breakers

Gerhard Richter, Abstraktes Bild, (1994). One of the most popular artists at the moment, the octogenarian has seen his work increase in value by over 600 percent in the past ten years, according to art market analysts. His oeuvre is celebrated as much for its range and versatility as for its virtuosity: his paintings tend to focus equally on the intellectual and the aesthetic. This is a particularly strong work, but the provenance coming from Clapton's private collection made the painting particularly attractive.

3 of 10

Photos: Art auctions: A look at the top record breakers

Vincent van Gogh, Portrait of Dr. Gachet, (1890). soldiers and citizens are holding hands as show of solidarity for attacked gay couple

The Dutch public peacefully marched hand in hand this past Wednesday in a remarkable show of solidarity for two gay men who were attacked as they walked home from a night out.

"We'll almost never show in public that we are in a relationship," one of the victims, Jasper Vernes Sewratan, told Dutch public broadcaster NOS, "But we had a few drinks, it was dark on the street and there were almost no people, so we held hands.

A group of young men in Arnhem, Netherlands, attacked the couple in the early hours last Sunday with a bolt cutter, leaving Sewratan Vernes missing four teeth and Vernes Sewratan with bruised ribs. snatching' sketch from 1980 makes his 'blood run cold'

The disgraced Australian children's entertainer was sentenced to five years and nine months in jail last week for abusing girls as young as seven. This week, a video clip from the satirical sketch pearl van cleef necklace imitation show 'Not The Nine O'Clock News', which was written and co produced by Lloyd, was widely shared on YouTube containing a joke about Harris's hit children's programme "Rolf on Saturday OK?".The sketch, which runs over the credits, features Rowan Atkinson and Mel Smith snatching children from the streets and bundling them into a van adorned with the name of Harris's programme. The footage, first broadcast in December 1980 in episode seven, series three of the BBC comedy show, was described as "revealing" by online commentators and posted on the blog of the former Daily Telegraph columnist Norman Lebrecht with the caption: "Watch, and wonder. Who knew?"Lloyd said that he and the team had been making a "pathetically mild" joke about how they "had to drum up an audience for a terrible Saturday show" and that it was "awful" to look back on the video in the wake of Harris' sex abuse convictions. He told The Independent: "It is extraordinary how spooky it is, it's almost prophetic."It makes the blood run cold to watch it now thinking about what he had done."Lloyd said the sketch was imitation van cleef jewelry run under the credits in the first place because it wasn't particularly strong the producers' way of "not bigging it up too much" but that it was a completely different experience to watch it now."It's not funny with hindsight it's absolutely grotesque," he said.Lloyd, who has produced BBC comedies including Not the Nine O'Clock News, QI and Spitting ImageThe clip is described on YouTube as having been 'banned', but Lloyd insisted it hadn't been and rejected any suggestion that he or anyone on the writing team "knew" about Harris's abusive reputation. He said: "There's this idea that people who do satire are uncaring or cruel but there was huge amounts of editorial discussion every week about where the line was and if we had crossed it."I'd never heard of anything about Harris, and even if I had it would beggar belief to do [this sketch] the lawyers would be all over us."Lloyd, who is also known for his work on Spitting Image, Blackadder and QI, said that BBC controllers also watched Not the Nine O'Clock News output "like hawks", and said: "If there had been any rumours at all about Harris at that higher level they would have stopped [the sketch] straight away."Since Harris's sentencing on Friday last week, more reports have emerged of allegations about his conduct some of which will never now be put before a jury.It was revealed on Friday that the Crown Prosecution Service will drop charges over claims Harris browsed websites featuring girls as young as 13 because it was "no longer in Van Cleef & Arpels necklace imitation the public interest" to pursue a second trial.Today it emerged that Harris's plumber claimed he found a stash of child sex abuse images under floorboards at a home owned by the entertainer in the late 1960s and early '70s.And at the weekend the TV presenter Vanessa Feltz and the singer Linda Nolan separately claimed that Harris had sexually assaulted them live on TV and backstage at a concert.Harris, 84, was jailed last week after being found guilty of 12 counts of indecent assault against four victims between 1968 and 1985.Click the Adblock/Adblock Plus icon, which is to the right of your address bar.On Adblock click "Don't run on pages on this domain".If you are Private Browsing in Firefox, "Tracking Protection" may cause the adblock notice to show. Royal baby a joyful and unifying force

I have been dismayed at the crass and disrespectful comments on radio about the royal family, the connection of Australia to the monarchy and what we should do to avoid being ''ruled'', eventually, by the new baby. I am a republican, but now is not the time for ridiculing rhetoric about the royals. The new baby has been safely delivered, to the great delight of many Brits, almost as many Australians, and others. This display of joy shows the great affection in which the public holds the royal family and imitation Van Cleef ring serves to unite the country, as did the Olympic Games and the diamond jubilee. The baby will be a celebrity and live an already preordained life. Like his great grandmother, the Queen, he will probably be a responsible, hard worker, visiting about 25 counties every year when he is in his late 80s. The new baby can't help being born into this particular family. Neither of the couple has used their extreme riches or privilege to do anything beneficial for anyone but themselves. In fact, the man's family does its utmost to pay as little tax as possible. Grants to cover ''household running costs'' for the Queen have risen to 36.1 million this year. Meanwhile, health and education are underfunded and taxpayers, who fund these benefit scroungers, are told to tighten their belts. Children are dying from starvation as this family hangs on to its money for dear life. Why isn't this in the headlines instead of the tripe about two people who have done nothing remarkable? This may be offensive, but it's not as offensive as people starving to death. And could we not be subject to such nauseating sycophancy?

Rajend Naidu, Glenfield, NSWDanijel Malbasa, your view that the PNG policy is harsh but right saddens me considering you have experienced the horror of being a refugee (''PNG policy is harsh, but it's the right way forward'', 24/7). I am always taken aback when former refugees seek to support the current inhumane and ruthless treatment of those in need of our compassion.

I, too, was a refugee. My family fled the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia to Vietnam, then fled again by boat to Thailand. We took that perilous boat trip as ''boat people'' and were finally resettled in Australia after time in a UNHCR refugee camp. So my journey too is not dissimilar to yours, but my mother made the fateful decision to get her family on a boat knowing full well that people had died at sea. It was a decision she was forced to make, just like the decisions that current refugees made. I am eternally grateful to my mother for making that terrible choice between risking it all at sea or ''waiting in a queue''. I would not hesitate to make that same decision if it meant saving my children from what we faced in Cambodia. If former refugees cannot show compassion to current refugees, what hope do we have in asking the Australian public to?

Phia Khuong, Sunshine

Policy is obscene

Every morning since Saturday I have opened my Age to find an obscene full page, publicly funded advertisement telling me that I won't be settled in Australia if I come here by boat. The ad must be meant for me and other Australians, as I doubt that The Age is delivered to people smugglers in Jakarta. I also read today that Australia is ranked second out of 186 nations on the UN Human Development Index. PNG, where Australia is now sending unfortunates who put their trust in this nation's humanity, ranks 156th. Australia is also considering dumping its responsibilities on East Timor ranked 134th and Solomon Islands, 143rd. The policy is obscene, and the ads are obscene. This used to be a decent country. What happened?

Mike Puleston, BrunswickThe Pope warns ''the world risks losing an entire generation of young people to unemployment'' (''Clashes in Rio as Pope warns of lost generation'', 24/7). Australia's contribution: denial of work rights to temporary protection visa holders.

Reverend Neil Tolliday, Altona MeadowsThe allegations of criminal abuse on Manus Island on SBS's Dateline (23/7) were appalling, and made all the worse by the fact that whistleblower Rod St George may face legal action for breaching a confidentiality agreement. Surely the use of a confidentiality agreement to prevent people speaking up about possible criminal acts and potential human rights abuse is contrary to the intended purpose of these agreements? People such as Mr St George should be celebrated for their courage, not threatened with litigation.

Anthony Bieniak, Caulfield North

Get out of gutter

No, Mark Baker, SBS's Better Man is not a must see for all (''Drama of unjust execution a must'', Comment, 24/7). By showing Better Man, SBS ensures an indescribable pain for Van Nguyen's mother and siblings. I agree with Bishop Philip Huggins (''Judge joins censure of SBS drama'', 24/7), ''that for a predatory section of the media to now feed on this anguish, fanning a distressing voyeurism, is disgraceful''. Instead of sensationalism for the sake of ratings, SBS would do well to consider the misery that screening Better Man will bring to a family punished by media for the wrong actions of their son and brother. Lift yourself out of the gutter, SBS, and be the broadcaster of excellence you can be.

Sigbert Muijsers, East BallaratWhile I agree with Professor Ed Byrne that it is disappointing that replica Van Cleef & Arpels diamond ring students can get into an education course with an ATAR of less than 50, he seems surprisingly ill informed (''Entry standards for teachers are too low'', Comment, 24/7). He says Monash University ''imposes'' an ATAR cut off for some of their education courses of 75 and 86. He, of all people, should understand that cut off scores are imposed by the students who apply for the course. It is not an arbitrary level set by the university. The scores for Monash are high because a lot of high quality (as measured by ATAR scores) students apply for these courses. Scores are lower for other courses because the students who apply have lower ATARs. If you want the ATAR scores to be consistently high for education courses, then you have to make the profession more attractive in the first place. While teachers are continually harangued by government and the media and chronically underpaid, is it any wonder that our best and brightest look elsewhere for a university course.

Ross Hudson, Camberwell

Show the connection

Professor Ed Byrne presents no evidence on the causal or even correlative relationship between ATARs and student progress or graduation rates. Nor does he demonstrate a link between subsequent teacher performance and ATARs. He doesn't even try to associate ATARs with the qualities necessary for teaching. Surely Monash would have this research to hand? And frankly, when I see a doctor, I don't ask what her high school results were. I look for her graduation from the degree for which I'm seeking her demonstrated expertise.

Janine Truter, The Basin

Justice joke

If anyone doubted that aspects of our justice system are a laughing stock, they should look no further than the curious case of Adrian Bayley and his traffic fines (''Bayley avoids imitation Van Cleef & Arpels diamond ring fines'', 24/7). By converting them into jail time to be served concurrently with his 35 year prison sentence, the Melbourne Magistrates Court has effectively gifted him $12,559, the value of the fines. Surely there are ways and means available in this case to claw back at least some of the money owing to the government rather than insult other law abiding motorists who, like me, pay up for any infringements to the road rules.

Springtime Is The Best Time For The Cruise

Hola amigos. Whassup? I know it's been a long time since I rapped at ya, but a lot of shit's been going down in Anchower Town. First off, I blew a tire. Now, ordinarily, that'd be no big deal, but my spare was flat and I didn't have a jack, so I was going to have to make some heavy financial sacrifices.

Worst part is, all of this happened around the same time my rent was due, so I had to make some hard choices with regard to cash allocation. It goes without saying that between my car and my rent, The Cruise comes first. You'd better believe The Cruise comes first. So I called up my landlord with some bullshit about how I'd be a little late with the rent because I had to send a bunch of money to my mom, who was in the hospital to have a corn removed. Well, the dumbass bought it, hook, line and sinker, and it bought me an extra couple of weeks. Smooth.

To earn the needed extra cash, I got a new job moving furniture for Marv's Furniture Blowout Warehouse. Man, that job blows! Not only do I have a boss ragging on me all the time, but all the people whose furniture I'm moving rag on me all day, too! I tell you, that's two too many people riding my ass. There's only room for one person on my ass, and that person is Jim Anchower.

Worst of all, with all this crap going on, I don't have any quality Jim time to unwind. After a day of hauling furniture and having people tell me I'm messing up their carpet or I let their damn cat out, I'm so wiped, I'm lucky if I have the energy to open even one icy cold MGD before hitting the sack. And to top it off, once I'm in bed, I can't even get to sleep because of these new neighbor girls who just moved in next door. Now, granted, they're hot, but they crank the crappiest music I've ever heard 24 hours a day!

I swear, that blippy bleepy techno dance shit all sounds the same. I'd be happy if there was just one hot Eddie Van Halen lick thrown in there somewhere, but it's all just a bunch of video game noises. I tried to get Ron to go over there so we could try a little creative retaliation, but he's such a pussy, he just went over and hung out with them. He must've been driving them nuts, 'cause not long after he got there, they turned off the music and made like they were going to bed. Then, about 10 minutes after he took off, the music was back on again, louder than ever. It's good to know that if I ain't getting any, at least Ron ain't getting any, either.

Anyway, I'd like to turn serious here for a minute. Now that the days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer, I need to speak my mind on the serious issue of cruising. See, when it comes to unwinding, cruising is the best thing in the world. It's like a zen meditation thing, only instead of sitting in a circle listening to a bunch of baldheaded feebs chanting, you get behind the wheel of your car and let it roll. When you're cruising properly, you become one with the road.

Now, in the past, I've told you all about how to cruise right. Hot car, keep an eye out for cops, a little Zep, a little Grand Funk, vanilla air freshener to cover up any conspicuous odors. All that shit. This time, though, I'm going to warn you about the dangers of cruising wrong.

Now, first off, the worst thing you can do when you're cruising is have an AM radio. All that talk radio, "I'm so smart, I can solve all your problems" crap is for suits and pricks. (Except for Art Bell. He's cool. Only he's gone now because The Man shut him down.) You can't expect to become one with the road if some loud mouth jerk is filling your mother of pearl clover bracelet replica head with all kinds of nonsense. You've got to have an FM radio and, ideally, a decent tape player with some good tapes. None of that truck stop Kenny Rogers or George Strait shit, either. I mean good tapes.

Second, you gotta have a decent car. Now, if you have a car that's been made in the last 10 years, you simply aren't with the program, my friend. A car's gotta have character, experience and class. And it can't be white, 'cause that looks too much like a cop car. Does it run smooth and quiet? Then do something about it! Punch some holes in the muffler. Put some glass packs on it. Make your presence known.

Third, the age old question: Windows up or windows down? Some people out there have told me shit like, "Oh, that's up to the individual's preference." The hell it is! Windows down! You've got the good taste to have only the finest in killer rock 'n' roll tunes, so you've got a responsibility to share them with your fellow motorists. The only excuse for having your windows rolled up is if it's raining. And in such instances, you make up for it by doing some fish tails around corners or greasing 'em off at a stop sign. Show people you know how to have a good time.

There are some other things you shouldn't do, but I shouldn't have to tell you everything. Some things are just common sense, like avoiding pigs and not driving when you're too fucked up. Just remember these pearls of wisdom when the primo cruising weather rolls around van cleef and arpels bracelets fake in about a month. Oh, yeah, and since spring is coming, I've been getting pretty hot to trot myself. So if you've got any buds with working wheels bracelet van cleef replica you could hook me up with, let me know. At this point, I ain't proud.

Star helped revolutionize the depiction of women on the small screen

Mary Tyler Moore, the star of TV's beloved "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" whose comic realism helped revolutionize the depiction of women on the small screen, has died.Moore gained fame in the 1960s as the frazzled wife Laura Petrie on "The Dick Van Dyke Show." In the 1970s, she created one of TV's first career woman sitcom heroines in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."She won seven Emmy awards over the years and was nominated for an Oscar for her 1980 portrayal of an affluent mother whose son is accidentally killed in "Ordinary People."She had battled diabetes copy van cleef and arpels necklace for many years. In 2011, she underwent surgery to remove a benign tumour on the lining of her brain. With her unerring gift for comedy, Moore seemed perfectly fashioned to the smarter wit of the new, post Eisenhower age. As Laura, she traded in the housedress of countless sitcom wives and clad her dancer's legs in Capri pants that were as fashionable as they were suited to a modern American woman.Laura was a dream wife and mother, but not perfect. Viewers identified with her flustered moments and her protracted, plaintive cry to her husband: "Ohhhh, Robbbb!"Moore's chemistry with Van Dyke was unmistakable. Decades later, he spoke warmly of the chaste but palpable off screen crush they shared during the show's run. They also appeared together in several TV specials over the years and in 2003, co starred in a PBS production of the play "The Gin Game."But it was as Mary Richards, the plucky Minneapolis TV news fake van cleef necklace producer on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" (1970 77), that Moore truly made her mark.At a time when women's liberation was catching on worldwide, her character brought to TV audiences an independent, 1970s career woman. Other than Marlo Thomas' 1960s sitcom character "That Girl," who at least had a steady boyfriend, there were few precedents.Mary Richards was comfortable being single in her 30s, and while she dated, she wasn't desperate to get married. She sparred affectionately with her gruff boss, Lou Grant, played by Ed Asner and addressed always as "Mr. Grant." And millions agreed with the show's theme song that she could "turn the world on with her smile."The show was filled with laughs. But no episode was more memorable than the bittersweet finale when new management fired the entire WJM News staff everyone but the preening, clueless anchorman, Ted Baxter. Thus did the series dare to question whether Mary Richards actually did "make it after all."The series ran seven seasons and won 29 Emmys, a record that stood for a quarter century until "Frasier" broke it in 2002."The Mary Tyler Moore Show" spawned the spin offs "Rhoda," (1974 78), starring Valerie Harper; "Phyllis" (1975 77), starring Cloris Leachman; and "Lou Grant" (1977 82), starring Asner in a rare drama spun off from a comedy.Mary Richards "certainly was never a character that I had to develop when we were doing the show," Moore said in a 1995 interview with The Associated Press. "Everything I did was by the seat of the pants. I reacted to every written situation the way I would have in real life."She likened being linked with that role to "growing up with a mother who is a very famous actress. There are all kinds of wonderful perks that go with it, and then there are little resentments, too."My life is inextricably intertwined with Mary Richards', and probably always will be," she said."Mary Tyler Moore" was the first in a series of acclaimed, award winning shows she produced with her second husband, Grant Tinker, who died in November 2016, through their MTM Enterprises. (The meowing kitten at the end of the shows was a parody of the MGM lion.) "The Bob Newhart Show," "Hill Street Blues," "St. Elsewhere" and "WKRP in Cincinnati" are among the MTM series that followed.Moore won her seventh Emmy in 1993, for supporting actress in a miniseries or special, for a Lifetime network movie, "Stolen Babies." She had won two for "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and the other four for "Mary Tyler Moore."At the time, her seven tied her with former co star Asner for the record of prime time Emmy acting wins. Another co star, Leachman, later surpassed them with eight prime time Emmys in acting and variety show categories. In 2012, Moore received the Screen Actors Guild's lifetime achievement award.Moore never achieved the individual success with a television series that she enjoyed with "Mary Tyler Moore."She starred in two different programs called "Mary" one, a comedy/variety hour similar to "The Carol Burnett Show," lasted only a few episodes in 1978. Another variety show, "The Mary Tyler Moore Hour," spent a few months on van cleef jewelry replica the air in 1979.The second "Mary," a sitcom in which Moore played a divorced Chicago newspaper columnist, bounced between time slots for about six months before being cancelled in 1986.Then in fall 1986, another flop: "Annie McGuire," in which she played a divorced woman who had remarried for the second time. It lasted just two months. She also asked to be written out of "New York News," a drama set at a newspaper, which aired for two months in 1995.

Renewable Sources of Electricity That'll Make the Future Safe

These above mentioned energy sources can be replenished naturally. In comparison to fossil fuels that are commonly utilized for energy generation, these sources are eco friendly. Another major advantage is that they generate clean van cleef arpels bracelet replica electricity without the emission of hazardous greenhouse gases. With the rising need for electricity, and replica van cleef bangle issues regarding the energy crisis, renewable energy resources are the future hope to meet the demand of the worldwide population. Humans have been using biomass for generating energy since long time. For example, wood biomass has been used to provide heat in many regions. It is still practiced in remote areas as the major source for cooking and heating. Apart from releasing heat, biomass can also be converted into electricity, biodiesel, ethanol, and methane gas. It refers to the energy present inside the Earth's crust. In order to generate electricity from this source, deep wells are dug and water with high temperature or steam is pumped into the Earth's surface. Naturally occurring hot water areas and heated groundwater aquifers are called geothermal reservoirs. power plants are built near such reservoirs. Presently, on the Earth's surface, this type of energy occurs mainly nearby hot springs and volcanoes. Electricity generation by using it was discovered in the 1880s. The principle behind the working of hydroelectric power plants, is to use mechanical energy of moving water (swiftly falling or descending water) to rotate the blades of a turbine, which in turn produces electricity. As the source is moving water, it is obvious that the power plants are located near the water bodies (natural waterfalls or man made dams). For electricity generation, there are two methods, direct and indirect techniques. In the former case, solar energy is converted directly into electricity by using solar cells or photovoltaic devices. In case of the latter one, solar heat that is harvested through the solar thermal collectors is used to heat fluid and produce steam. This steam produces electricity by using generators. Wind turbines or windmills are installed, especially at the higher elevated areas, and in a particular orientation so as to harvest maximum wind energy. A series of wind farms installed for supplying electricity in a mass scale is called a wind power plant. Nowadays, many private companies have started the business of fake van cleef diamond bracelet installing such plants to produce and sell electricity to large industries.

As per statistics, the use of renewable energy resources has tremendously increased in recent times. However, one of the major drawbacks of such sources is the high cost that is involved. More sophisticated techniques need to be introduced in order to combat this problem, and make these sources available to the general public.

Station Eleven

He started with water, filled one of the oversized shopping carts with as many cases and bottles as he could fit. There was a moment of doubt on the way to the cash registers, straining against the weight of the cart he overreacting? there was a certain momentum now, too late to turn back. The clerk raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

"I'm parked just outside," he said. clover necklace van cleef knock off "I'll bring the cart back." The clerk nodded, tired. She was young, early twenties probably, with dark bangs that she kept pushing out of her eyes. He forced the impossibly heavy cart outside and half pushed, half skidded through the snow at the exit. There was a long ramp down into a small park like arrangement of benches and planters. The cart gained speed on the incline, bogged down in deep snow at the bottom of the ramp and slid sideways into a planter.

It was eleven twenty. The supermarket closed in forty minutes. He was imagining how long it would take to bring the cart up to Frank's apartment, to unload it, the time required for tedious explanations and reassurances of sanity before he could return to the grocery store for more supplies. Could there be any harm in leaving the cart here for the moment? There was no one van cleef & arpels necklace knock off on the street. He called Hua on his way back into the store.

"What's happening now?" He moved quickly through the store while Hua spoke. Another case of water was under the impression that one can never have too much then cans and cans of food, all the tuna and beans and soup on the shelf, pasta, anything that looked like it might last a while. The hospital was full of flu patients and the situation was identical at the other hospitals in the city. The ambulance service was overwhelmed. nurses who'd been on duty when the first patients came in. The shopping cart was almost unmanageably heavy. Hua said he'd called his wife and told her to take the kids and leave the city tonight, but not by airplane. Jeevan was standing by the cash register again, the clerk scanning his cans and packages. The part of the evening that had transpired in the Elgin Theatre seemed like possibly a different lifetime. The clerk was moving very slowly. Jeevan passed her a credit card and she scrutinized it as though she hadn't just seen it five or ten minutes ago.

"Take Laura and your brother," Hua said, "and leave the city tonight."

"I can't leave the city tonight, not with my brother. I can't rent a wheelchair van at this hour."

In response there was only a muffled sound. Hua was coughing.

"Are you sick?" Jeevan was pushing the cart toward the door.

"Goodnight, Jeevan." Hua disconnected and Jeevan was alone in the snow. He felt possessed. The next cart was all toilet paper. The cart after that was more canned goods, also frozen meat and aspirin, garbage bags, bleach, duct tape.

"I work for a charity," he said to the girl behind the cash register, his third or fourth time through, but she wasn't paying much attention to him. She kept glancing up at the small television above the film development counter, ringing his items through on autopilot. Jeevan called Laura on his sixth trip through the store, but his call went to voicemail.

"Laura," he began. "Laura." He thought it better to speak to her directly and it was already almost eleven van white gold alhambra necklace replica fifty, there wasn't time for this. Filling the cart with more food, moving quickly through this bread and flower scented world, this almost gone place, thinking of Frank in his 22nd floor apartment, high up in the snowstorm with his insomnia and his book project, his day old New York Times and his Beethoven. Jeevan wanted desperately to reach him. He decided to call Laura later, changed his mind and called the home line while he was standing by the checkout counter, mostly because he didn't want to make eye contact with the clerk.

"Jeevan, where are you?" She sounded slightly accusatory. He handed over his credit card.

"Are you watching the news?"

"Should I be?"

"There's a flu epidemic, Laura. It's serious."

"That thing in Russia or wherever? I knew about that."

"It's here now. It's worse than we'd thought. I've just been talking to Hua. You have to leave the city." He glanced up in time to see the look the checkout girl gave him.

"Have to? What? Where are you, Jeevan?" He was signing his name on the slip, struggling with the cart toward the exit, where the order of the store ended and the frenzy of the storm began. It was difficult to steer the cart with one hand. There were already five carts parked haphazardly between benches and planters, dusted now with snow.

"Just turn on the news, Laura."

"You know I don't like to watch the news before bed. Are you having an anxiety attack?"

"What? No. I'm going to my brother's place to make sure he's okay."

"Why wouldn't he be?"

"You're not even listening. You never listen to me." Jeevan knew this was probably a petty thing to say in the face of a probable flu pandemic, but couldn't resist. He plowed the cart into the others and dashed back into the store. "I can't believe you left me at the theatre," he said. "You just left me at the theatre performing CPR on a dead actor."

"Jeevan, tell me where you are."

"I'm in a grocery store." It was eleven fifty five. This last cart was all grace items: vegetables, fruit, bags of oranges and lemons, tea, coffee, crackers, salt, preserved cakes. "Look, Laura, I don't want to argue. This flu's serious, and it's fast.""This flu, Laura. It's really fast. Hua told me. It's spreading so quickly. I think you should get out of the city." At the last moment, he added a bouquet of daffodils.

Romelu Lukaku's Everton record could be just the start for him

Records keep tumbling for Everton Romelu Lukaku, the Premier League top van cleef and arpels jewellery replica goalscorer. Adam Bate wades through the numbers.

When Romelu Lukaku forced the ball in for Everton's second in the 2 0 win over Sunderland it was far from his most polished effort, but it was an historic one. The goal not only took him to the top of the Premier League scoring charts alongside Alexis Sanchez but also put him level with Duncan Ferguson as Everton's top scorer in the competition's history.

Ferguson is an Everton icon and as a member of the club's coaching staff was on hand to celebrate the achievement with Lukaku. But even his staunchest admirers would struggle to make the case for the Scot being a goalscorer of the pedigree of the Belgian. Ferguson reached his total of 60 goals in 239 games. Lukaku has done so in just 129 appearances.

Lukaku has equalled Duncan Ferguson's Premier League record for Everton

The feeling persists that there is more to come. Former coach Steve Clarke, under whom Lukaku scored 17 Premier League goals on loan at West Brom while still a teenager, recently suggested as much. His current coach Ronald Koeman even used the occasion of the player's record equalling feat to hammer home that message afterwards.

"There is still a long way to go," said Koeman. "One of his big qualities is scoring goals. He's strong, he's fast. But I also think he can improve giving options to the midfield players and threat to the defenders. We press from the front. His actions mean we might not have to pass the ball back to the goalkeeper and we can push up as a team."

Lukaku has now scored 60 Premier League goals for Everton

It is true that the forward can improve his hold up play and he must also work on his movement if he is to truly fulfil his vast potential and become the global superstar that his fans believe he can be. But make no mistake about it, when it comes to sheer weight of goals the verdict is already in Lukaku is a goalscoring phenomenon.

His total of 77 Premier League goals puts him among the top 50 with the van cleef vintage alhambra necklace imitation likes of Fernando Torres, Cristiano Ronaldo and Dennis Bergkamp in his sights. Ruud van Nistelrooy is not much further ahead and at the current rate he can expect to join the 100 club next season. Eric Cantona and Daniel Sturridge are among those who have been overtaken this term.

Lukaku is among the top scoring active Premier League players

In fact, there are only five current Premier League players ahead of him on the list. Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero, of course, along with veteran strikers Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch. But with Lukaku, it is his age that really marks him out as something special. He does not turn fake van jewelry 24 until Everton's final home game of the season against Watford in May.

Crouch scored only 11 Premier League goals before turning 24. Even Defoe, something of a talent himself as a youngster, scored 48. The closest comparison to Lukaku at the same stage is perhaps Rooney, and the Everton forward still has a dozen games in which to reach the Manchester United captain's tally of 86 goals before celebrating his 24th birthday.

WATCH: Lukaku's best goals Watch Romelu Lukaku's best Premier League goals after he equals the Everton record.

In historic terms, he is ahead of Thierry Henry, Luis Suarez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the same age and is now level with the tally of goals that Ronaldo managed before turning 24. While it would be folly to expect the same exponential improvement, it further emphasises the goalscoring level at which he is operating. No current 23 year old can match him.

There has been far more discussion of Harry Kane's prospects of breaking Alan Shearer's record of 260 Premier League goals, and yet both the Tottenham striker and Lukaku were born in the same summer of 1993. It is the Everton player who has an 11 goal lead and is matching the Englishman this season to boot.

Having joined Chelsea for back in 2011, it already feels as though Lukaku has been around forever. To illustrate the point, he made his debut up front alongside Nicolas Anelka for Andre Villas Boas' Blues. And yet, remarkably, in this his sixth Premier League campaign, he is still eligible for the forthcoming PFA young player of the year award.

So how many more goals are there to come and who will he be scoring them for? That could depend on the other aspects of his game alluded to by Koeman and the progress that is made in that regard. But whether he adds those qualities to his game or not, it seems certain that the goals will keep coming. For Lukaku, there are many more records ahead.

The History of Communism in Germany

It was the German Marx who first published the Communist Manifesto during the 19th century. This book inspired various Marxist groups both inside and outside of Germany. However, left wing politics did not really take off in Germany until Bismark resigned in the late 19th century, who had previously banned German socialist parties.

Bismarck was a Prussian aristocrat weary of the rise of socialism. As such, there was little scope for communist parties and Marxist groups in Germany during this period. In fact, even after Bismarck resigned Marxist groups in van cleef diamond necklace copy Germany did not emerge at the beginning of the 20th century. However, the German Socialist Party, the SPD, gained lots of support before the outbreak of the war. They were one of the biggest parties in the Reichstag by 1914.

During the war that followed, Germany defeats eroded support for its monarchy. German troops were surrendering in number to the Entente by 1918, and calls for an end to arpels van cleef necklace fake the war and Wilhelm 2nd's abdication became louder in Germany. The Entente also made it clear that they were not prepared to accept an armistice unless Wilhelm 2nd abdicated the throne. So Wilhelm 2nd did abdicate, and German delegates met with the Entente to discuss an armistice at Foch carriage. The war ended on November 11, 1918.

The removal of the German monarchy was followed by the drafting of a new charter for the Weimar Republic. The SPD were the most influential party in the Weimar Republic, but the new Reichstag had many parties including the KPD, which was the German Communist Party.[1] Partly inspired by Lenin and the Bolsheviks in Russia, KPD activists Rosa Luxembourg and Liebknecht attempted a similar coup in 1919, the Spartacus uprising. This coup failed, and neither Luxembourg of Liebknecht survived.

However, the KPD remained in the Reichstag and campaigned in the various Weimar Republic elections. The KPD gradually gained an increasing amount of support in Germany during the 1920s. By the end of the 1920s they had gained a number of seats in the Reichstag. At the beginning of the 1930s they were the biggest communist party in Europe, and as support for the Weimar Republic declined the likelihood of the KPD winning an election increased markedly.

Two factors prevented a communist regime emerging in Germany during the early 1930s. The first was that they could not establish a united front with the SPD to defeat fascism. In addition, the Reichstag fire in 1933 was also blamed on the communists. It was the communist Van Der Lubbe that burnt the Reichstag, although debate has remained whether Van Der Lubbe did it alone. However, the Nazi Party blamed communists generally; and the left wing parties disappeared from Germany entirely as the Nazis consolidated.

For the remainder of the decade the only chance of a communist revival in Germany would likely come from war. Tensions between Germany and the USSR remained, and the Treaty of Versailles was gradually overturned. In 1938, German troops occupied Czechoslovakia and war in Europe seemed likely.

However, Germany and the USSR established the Nazi Soviet Pact with the USSR promising neutrality if the German army advanced into Poland. In 1939, war began as German soldiers occupied Poland; although the Soviets remained neutral until 1941.

The war in the East did not begin well for the USSR, as the Germans advanced further into Russia. The Russian winter and Soviet reinforcements stabilized the front in late 1941. However, a renewed German advance into southern Russia in 1942 put the oil fields of the Caucasus within reach. The Russians held out and encircled the German army at Stalingrad, and in 1943 the Red Army advanced westwards. By 1945, the Red Army occupied much of Eastern Europe and advanced into east Germany and Berlin. Germany then surrendered to the Allies.

At Potsdam Germany was divided into various occupation zones, including the Russian zone in East Germany that included Berlin. The USSR established the GDR (German Democratic Republic) communist regime in 1949. A new communist regime had revived communism in Germany. However, many Germans fled the GDR and emigrated to western Germany, which prospered during the 1950s.

As emigration continued in the van cleef alhambra diamond necklace replica 1960s, the GDR established a wall in Berlin. The Berlin Wall emerged during the 1960s, and remained in place for much of the Cold War. Only in 1989, when communist regimes began to fall in the Eastern Bloc, would the Berlin Wall crumble.[2] Without the support of the Russian army, the GDR consented to the opening of the Berlin Wall. Consequently, east Germans began to cross into West Berlin; and the wall was gradually demolished.

This marked the end of the GDR, and paved the way for German unification in the 1990s. In 1990, Germany united and the GDR was history. Communism in Germany declined, and since unification a number of left wing groups have dissolved. However, in 2007 The Left party was established as a successor to the KPD; and today is one of the larger parties in the Reichstag.

It was the Russian army and Communist Party of the Soviet Union that really established a communist regime in Germany in the postwar era. No communist party has ever really been elected by the Germans, but the KPD gained an increasing amount of support in the early 1930s. Since German unification there has been little sign that this could change, except perhaps the rise of The Left party, which is the largest left wing party in Germany.

State Controller Betty Yee wants tax reform that relies less van cleef necklace copy on the top 1

New state Controller Betty Yee is not your typical politician. She's boldly sticking her neck out on a continuous issue bound to cause grief.

The issue is tax reform, a taboo subject for most elected officials. At least, the comprehensive reform not merely cutting taxes and creating loopholes she's talking about. She wants to broaden the tax base, collecting from more people and relying less on the top 1%.

"It's not because I don't want to tax the rich," the Democrat says. "It's just that I don't think it's sustainable" to perpetually bank on the wealthy as cash cows for the state treasury.

There's plenty of proof for that concern. California's state tax system functions like a yo yo, performing erratically depending on whether the economy is booming or busting.

There's no way to plan consistent funding for schools, universities, social services, public works and law enforcement.

Democrat Betty Yee, the California controller, wants to broaden the state's tax base. ()

Especially dicey are incomes of the rich, which fluctuate wildly based on whether their investments their capital gains soar or sour.

The latest figures, for 2013, show the top 1% accounting for 21.8% of California's adjusted gross income but providing 45.4% of the state's personal income tax. The top 10% earned 49% of the income and paid 78% of the tax receipts.

Yee wants to Van Cleef &?Arpels?Clover necklace replica stabilize the revenue flow by making the tax system less progressive, less soak the rich. But and here's a key point she also says the state should spend more on the middle class and working poor.

It's really hard to blame all our ills on the tax system. Betty Yee, state controller

She mentions pumping more funds into higher education to stem tuition hikes, into healthcare for the poor and into affordable housing.

"It's really hard to blame all our ills on the tax system," Yee says, adding that spending also is to blame.

She criticizes some "tax expenditures" breaks and loopholes that cost the treasury money. "Once these things are enacted," she says, "they're there forever, although they may have outlived their usefulness."

One example she cites: The mortgage interest deduction for vacation homes. "What's the policy rationale for that?" she asks. "That's a benefit for the rich. But we can't afford to build low income housing for people who don't have a roof over their heads."

She also plans to seriously look into spreading the sales tax to services, as many states have done. Our economy now is based much more on services than retail goods, but we only tax the latter. California's tax system is stuck back in the mid 20th century.

Hardly any other politician, however, is trying to match taxes to 21st century realities. There's too much grief in it because some voters would wind up paying more.

One exception to this timidity is state Sen. Bob Hertzberg (D Van Nuys), who's scurrying about trying to build a reform coalition, so far unsuccessfully.

"I don't think the governor has any plans to do tax reform," Yee says. From every indication, she's right.

Yee recently created a nine member advisory council to study California's tax system. It will analyze the practical effects, unintended consequences and possible alternatives of various proposals.

The controller isn't asking the council to settle on a reform package, although she could eventually propose one herself. The group's purpose, she says, is to answer "the first question people want to know: 'How does this apply to me?'"

Yee, 57, is gutsy, disciplined and a policy wonk. She's also pleasant and genuine, but hardly charismatic. You won't hear much of either small talk or soaring rhetoric.

She's one of those "only in America" stories.

Her parents emigrated from China her dad in the 1930s after his family told him he had no future there, and her mother in the 1950s when she escaped the new Communist regime.

Yee grew up in San Francisco's foggy Sunset District, keeping the books for her parents' laundry and dry cleaning business. That's how she got hooked on numbers. The family of eight lived in a studio apartment behind the laundry, packed replica necklace van cleef arpels into bunks and a couch.

Her introduction to politics came as a 13 year old when she argued before the San Francisco school board against busing her sister across town in an integration program. "I told them they should take the busing money and invest it in schools," she recalls.

Yee lost the argument, "but I learned about being a voice for someone," she says.

She graduated from UC Berkeley and wound up working in the state Capitol crunching numbers, first for the Legislature and then Gov. Gray Davis as his chief deputy budget director. Then she latched on with the state Board of Equalization and eventually was elected to a seat.
